Snoring vs sleep apnoea: how to tell the difference

Snoring is the sound of vibration in a narrowed airway. Sleep apnoea is a breathing disorder where airflow repeatedly reduces or stops during sleep. Loud snoring, witnessed pauses, choking or gasping, morning headaches, high blood pressure, or daytime sleepiness can mean snoring needs medical assessment.

What snoring means

Snoring happens when air movement causes relaxed tissue in the throat or nose to vibrate during sleep. It can be linked with sleep position, alcohol, nasal congestion, anatomy, weight, or tiredness.

What sleep apnoea means

Obstructive sleep apnoea is different from simple noise. The airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, which can reduce oxygen levels and disturb sleep quality.

Warning signs to take seriously

  • Pauses in breathing noticed by a partner.
  • Choking, gasping, or waking suddenly at night.
  • Daytime sleepiness, poor concentration, or morning headaches.
  • High blood pressure or other cardiovascular risk factors.
